VIEIRA DA SILVA
Works on Paper, 1930–1991
15 April — 13 June 2026
“I can only see… with a pencil in my hand.”
It is on paper that Maria Helena Vieira da Silva’s painting begins. Not as study or preparation, but as thought. The twenty-eight works brought together in this exhibition, made between 1930 and 1991, trace six decades of a singular investigation into space: the early Paris compositions, the years of exile in Rio de Janeiro, the return to Paris and full maturity, through to the artist’s final works.
Gouaches, watercolours, temperas, ink drawings—each technique reveals the same method in different states: to construct and deconstruct space until it becomes inhabitable.
“I make and unmake space,” as the artist herself put it.
The exhibition is organised in partnership with Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger, Paris, which has represented Vieira da Silva’s work since her first solo exhibition in 1933.
